Take a Walk – Art Gems in Fremont

When the weather and schedule permits, I walk to pick up my children from school. This gives us a chance to talk about their day without having to navigate after school traffic and attitudes. If we drive home, the ride is filled with complaints about car-sickness and who didn’t follow the rules at recess. (I still haven’t figured out how my son can develop car-sickness after 2 seconds in the car, but he insists on lowering the windows no matter the temperature.)

Our walk is only a few blocks, but along the way we discover many treats. In one tree on Elm Street, the bark was damaged long ago. Someone installed a door knob, inviting us to think about the gnomes sneaking in and out when no one is looking.

As spring finally gets into its groove, we notice crocuses and tulips sprouting in people’s yards. The bright colors cheer us as we discuss what everyone learned in music or gym or art.

In the fall, we pass a variety of Hay Art entries. the kids are excited to see the creativity of our fellow residents and businesses. We often stop and study the design and construction of each one.

Depending on which route we take, we will stroll by the several sculptures in downtown Fremont. Some days we cross the street by the Waves of Grain and behind the ArtsPlace with its giant metal flowers. We also enjoy the murals across from the City Hall and the statue outside the library. Other days, we pass the post office and the blue feather in the stone called the Writers’ Stone. We look forward to construction of paths around the Fremont Area District Library and installation of the Oak Arch.

We love living in a pedestrian-friendly community that provides art inspiration.
