The winter fishing season has begun! Due to consistently low temperatures, this year Newaygo is looking forward to a great ice fishing season. As the temperatures began to drop, ice shanties popped up on the inland lakes around the region signaling that it is time to get out on the ice. Ice fishing is one of the favorite winter pastimes of our region due to the abundance of great inland lakes to drop in a line.
Some of the best spots to check out that have simple public access are: Hardy Dam County Marina, Nichols Lake, Croton Pond, and Diamond Lake. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources fishing report provides weekly updates on where fish are being caught and species by location. You can get this information and fishing license information on the DNR site.
Dam to Dam Ice Fishing Tournament
When February comes around, we look forward to the annual tradition of the Dam to Dam Ice Fishing Tournament at Croton Pond. The tournament will be held on February 15th this year. In addition to ice fishing, the day will be filled with food, vendors, music and giveaways. Registration is only $5, and each adult who registers will be entered to win prizes. Come be a part of the fun!
NewayGo County is known as a destination for 4 season fishing. If casting a line in the open river is more your style, you’ll find the Muskegon and White Rivers to be ideal destinations throughout the winter months for catching trout and steelhead. Our river maps provide access information for both rivers throughout Newaygo County.
Imagine fishing a river surrounded by snow covered trees and glimpses of wildlife making their way to the open water as you silently cast your line. Either river provides a peaceful setting for a relaxing, nature-focused getaway in the middle of the winter months.
Get Your Gear
While in Newaygo, you may find yourself in need of some new gear and we have three great locations to find just what you need. Parsley Sport Shop is a trusted local sports outfitter that has waders, poles, and everything you will need for your fishing adventure and 37 North has everything you will need to stay warm and dry. Hesperia Sport Shop, located less than a mile from Hesperia Dam, can set you up with the top brands of fishing and fly tying supplies.
Now that you have a plan for where to head for your winter fishing expedition, all you need is a great place to stay. The Harrington Inn, Trailside, Muskegon River Inn, and Oakridge Motel each offer a welcoming and comfortable place throughout the year to rest your head before heading out for another day of winter angling.
