Paddling the Muskegon or White River

With the warm and sunny summer season upon us, it’s a great time to explore the waterways of the region. What better way to stay cool than paddling the swift flowing waters of the White River or floating the slower rolling Muskegon River.

The White River includes about 253 linear miles of streams, beginning in north central region of Newaygo County, flowing southwest to White Lake, and then to Lake Michigan. The total length of the river from the headwater to Lake Michigan is 89.8 miles. With faster flowing waters and obstacles along the way, this river can provide a more challenging adventure for the experienced paddler. Learn all about where to launch, area amenities, and spot to stop along the way with our White River map, and before you go let Hesperia Sport Shop set you up with everything you will need for your White River expedition.

The Muskegon River offers a friendlier float on slower flowing waters. This waterway is wider and therefore slower and easier for a casual paddle. The pace is perfect for kayaking solo, canoeing with friends, or even stand-up paddle boarding on the warmer days. Plan your paddling adventure with our Muskegon River map, and let Croton Dam Float trips help you plan a paddling adventure to remember with their full-service livery.

Explore the Newaygo Birding Trail

Newaygo County has long been a sportsperson’s paradise. People come from across the Midwest to fish our lakes and rivers and hunt in our National Forest, but what many may not know is the incredible opportunity Newaygo County offers for birders of all levels.

A dedicated group of volunteers have been working tirelessly to create a birding trail that extends to the furthest reaches of our county highlighting the very best spots for birding. 38 sites are identified on our website, with each listing providing details about the habitat, amenities, and bird species found at each stop. For those using the eBird app, our sites are also linked to eBird listings for a deeper depth of information and tracking.

On our website, you will also find maps that have been created to help you find your way. We have a fully interactive map to track while you make your way around the county but have also broken the sites into specific trail type categories for: County parks, hiking trails, accessible trails, and paddling trails for those with specific interests. There’s no right or wrong way to follow the trail. We hope you are inspired to explore!
