The Edge is a hiking and biking trail that runs along the Muskegon River on roads from Hardy Dam to Croton Dam. It’s a slightly downhill stretch, so if you are running expect to have a fantastic pace per mile.
I participated in a race a few years ago that started at the north end of the Hardy Dam and finished at DuChemin Park. The evening was damp and cool, perfect for the seven-mile jaunt. Though the path is directly beside the road, it provides plenty of room for bikers, walkers, and runners to navigate safely while cars pass. Also, because The Edge is paved, it is accessible for strollers and other wheeled devices.
The Edge provides a little of everything when it comes to views. At the start of the race, we looked out over Hardy Pond. The middle of the trail was sheltered by towering evergreens and featured houses set back from the road.
The closer we got to Croton Dam the more quaint were the cottages and business that filled our view. An ice cream shop or the grocery store provides treats to enjoy while you walk. The last section of the trail is separated from the road by a lush canvas of greenery. We finished the race at DuChemin Park, but a walker could park at the top of the hill with an excellent view of the Croton Dam. I missed the turn on the trail and didn’t realize it until I was half-way up the hill. Oops.
Several parks dot the trail making it a great place for an afternoon walk with a picnic or treat.
