The trees are bare, the air is crisp and the calendar has just flipped to November… In Northern Michigan, that means deer hunters are headed to the woods! 

If you haven’t tried your luck in the deer woods of Newaygo County, we recommend checking it out.  With thousands of acres of National Forest, the hunting possibilities are endless, and the numbers of deer abound. In addition, hunting is part of our culture in Newaygo County, and we welcome hunters every year in our towns and establishments.


If you are traveling to Newaygo County for deer season this  year, we’ve curated a list of places you need to stop at.  

Hungry?  These places get you.  Hunter orange is celebrated, and these eateries thrive on creating stick-to-your-rib meals.  

The Eagles, located in White Cloud, is open to the public for dining, and their large selection of delicious, freshly cooked meals is sure to warm your bones after you’ve been in the woods all day.  Many times, The Eagles has a great special on the menu, like this fish dinner!

CJ’s Smoked Specialties, just north of Hesperia, has some great house-made brats and the best bacon for miles, in addition to a decent menu of to-go grub.

Looking for a breakfast to give you enough energy to track a buck for hours?  The Lumberjack Shack in Fremont has pancakes the size of your head, that will keep you full all day.

In Newaygo, City Limits Family Restaurant has large portions of home-cooked meals & friendly staff who are eager to hear your hunting stories.  It is a great place to bring the whole crew, as their menu has something for everyone!

Serving up breakfast to dinner, The Depot in Grant is known for their railroad-themed restaurant, with delicious made-to-order meals & homemade desserts available daily.


In Northern Newaygo County, Woody’s Bar & Grill offers some of the best pizza in Newaygo County.  Their pizza is made in a wood-fired brick oven & goes excellent with a cold beverage after a long day of hunting in the north woods of Newaygo County.

                                                                                                  Need some supplies?  Whether you forgot your ammunition, you need another orange hat or a new deer call, these establishments have been trusted by hunters for decades.  Both places are run by friendly, knowledgeable outdoor enthusiasts & offer a wide variety of outdoor and hunting supplies.  No matter where your stand is, either Hesperia Sport Shop or Parsley’s Sport Shop aren’t too far away.
