Introducing the Newaygo Birding Trail

Newaygo County has long been a sportsperson’s paradise. People come from across the Midwest to fish our lakes and rivers and hunt in our National Forest, but what many may not know is the incredible opportunity Newaygo County offers for birders of all levels.

A dedicated group of volunteers have been working tirelessly to create a birding trail that extends to the furthest reaches of our county highlighting the very best spots for birding. 38 sites are identified on our website, with each listing providing details about the habitat, amenities, and bird species found at each stop. For those using the eBird app, our sites are also linked to eBird listings for a deeper depth of information and tracking.

On the new webpage, you will also find maps that have been created to help you find your way. We have a fully interactive map to track while you make your way around the county but have also broken the sites into specific trail type categories for: County parks, hiking trails, accessible trails, and paddling trails for those with specific interests. There’s no right or wrong way to follow the trail. We hope you are inspired to explore!

Morel Mushroom Hunting

Morel mushroom hunters know that when the ground begins to warm and spring rains have arrived, it’s time to head to the woods. Although we don’t have a secret spot to share, NewayGo County is home to 100+ miles of trails and  the Huron-Manistee National Forest provides plenty of public access to land for all those interested in mushroom hunting.

The Huron-Manistee National Forest provides extensive recreation opportunities for hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, and so much more. In spring, the forest’s rare ecological features: dry sand prairies, coastal marshlands, dunes, oak savannahs, bogs, and marshes provide a unique setting for the enjoyment of all silent sports.

Spring River Fishing Season

Spring is peak season for steelhead fishing on the Muskegon and White Rivers. Each year, as winter ends, anglers make their way to the open water of our area rivers to take part in early spring fishing for steelhead trout, sometimes weighing as much as 20 pounds. The rivers are low and clear at this time of the year, making it an ideal time to give river fishing a try for those new to the sport; or for seasoned anglers to have an experience of a lifetime.

River Access

Looking for access points to the rivers? Check out our Muskegon River and White River maps for access and launch locations. A new map is in production which offers more comprehensive details about the Muskegon River. Watch our Facebook page for updates.

A highly recommended area on the Muskegon River is below the Croton Dam at the Pine Street or Thornapple launches. On the White River anglers catch steelhead at the access points below the Hesperia Dam. Be aware that some launch points will require a Michigan Recreation Passport for parking.
